Day 183. Ultimate Legends - Bill Hicks

Tragically taken from us at the age of 32, William Melvin 'Bill' Hicks was more than just the greatest stand-up of the last 30 years - he was the voice of expanionist America's much-neglected conscience. In the tradition of past masters like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, he was utterly unafraid of upsetting the established order - in fact, he thrived on it. He also liked LSD and told a lot of dick and fart jokes too.

Day 182. Ultimate Legends/Writers - H.P. Lovecraft

182. Howard Philips Lovecraft - like many artists - did not find significant fame and fortune in his own (tragically short) lifetime, but his legacy towers over modern horror like that of no other author, with the possible exception of Poe. The terms 'Cthulhu' and 'Lovecraftian' are more commonplace than ever, and, to the initiated, evoke unique feelings of dread and terror. Always with Lovecraft it was the unseen, the terrors at the edge of things, half-glimpsed multi-dimensional horrors that drove the viewer insane. Many modern horror writers and film-makers often forget that it's what you don't see that truly terrifies.

He is fondly remembered for his creation - the intrepid boy journalist, his dog Snowy and the inimitable Captain Haddock and their timeless exploits of course recently adapted into the epic CG-fest from Spielberg and Jackson. Herge's work demonstrated perfectly the 'ligne-claire' technique - everything drawn in clear detail and with equal weight of line.

Day 173. Screen Icons II - Klaus Kinski

173. The intense gaze of Klaus Kinski's made him the perfect choice for Count Orlok in Werner Herzog's 70s interpretation of Nosferatu. The two collaborated frequently, despite a volatile working relationship: during the tortuous filming of Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Herzog is alleged to have threatened his leading man with a gun if he made good on his promise to walk off the set, then turn it on himself. According to various sources, this story is either true or simply apocryphal; either way the pair embodied the vibrant German New Wave of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
